lyrics

I wake up on Thanksgiving day
Turn on the Macy's Parade
I've been sleeping on a couch
For about four or five hours
They're saying it'll snow
I wonder how they know the weather
When I can't tell the difference
Between night and day
I watch the fire embers turn to coals
The sparks drift away like wild floats

I watch her at the stove
She doesn't make a move
The flames below her fingertips
They wrap her up before they slip
A phone call yesterday
Her job is on the fritz
She can lose a dollar-fifty
Or she can call it quits
One choice insures her for the future
One slips a dagger in her past

I can break down the middle
I can try to hold you up
But on Thanksgiving morning
Maybe silence is a crutch

She's putting all her paints away
The canvas leaves the wall
She can't wait till Saturday
When she can let her guard fall
But right now she has company
Family's on the way
I face down the TV set
Santa hasn't made it yet
The yard out the window's turning white
Day seems to darken into night

Dreams get hold of our lives
Pretty tethered lies we lead
Floating overhead
Storms dissolve the rope
Beauty blows away
End of the parade

We sit out on the porch
Breathing in the salt and the weather
There's people moving forward
Before the snow's has time to melt
I watch the marchers down below us
She's got her eyes aimed at the sky

I can break down the middle
I can try to hold you up
But on Thanksgiving morning
Maybe silence is the crutch
