lyrics

A belt buckle clinks on the floor
Its rhythm is loveless
Another unhealing embrace

Working dry days takes its toll
The fires of old keep crackling,
Kinetic in space

And every night she awakes to find
One more blistering burn
Reappear on her chest

But she holds her tongue for fear of disturbing
The ones who keep her vigil by day
She who holds her tongue and imagines forgiveness:
The whole town desires, delights, and then pays.

She says, “Come along daddy, come to me
Show me to your tent
We each have our fires to attend

“If you come closer I swear
My touch will be pure
Though my heart is aching elsewhere”

And every night it’s the same inspired performances
Keeping my sister alive

But with each man she takes she wonders the stakes
In continuing commingling. How much is enough?
She’s tired when she wakes, her sleep seems to break her
And daily the blisters continue to burn
